Northern Vicinity of Berlin Trade Fair

Development of parking lots P1/P2, Berlin-Charlottenburg
Client: Senate Department for Urban Development
Commission: urban planning for land-use plan
2003

The site is promiently located directly across the street from the International Congress Center Berlin. It is currently being used as a parking lot and is cut in two halves by a superhighway junction. The program called for trade fair related uses like a congress hotel and an urban entertainment center.

We accepted the difficult geometries generated by traffic. At the same time, the project relates to the nearby Broadcast House by Hans Poelzig. The three big houses are organized around central atria. They can be built at intervals. The aim is a re-urbanisation of this rather desolate part of town. Until that is achieved, the houses have to be able to exist as solitary buildings.
